ON BEHALF OF USAID-PEPFAR, ACCREDITING NAZLIN UMAR FAZALDIN RAJPUT AND HER HISTORICAL GROUNDBREAKING PROJECTS
Launched by the Vice President of the Republic of Kenya His Excellency Hon Moody Awori and the United States Ambassador His Excellency William Bellamy, on the 25th day of April at the Panafric Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya.
“I was recently talking about HIV/AIDS in Pakistan and it just didn’t work and here we are in a room filled with women. We have come so far and I’m so proud of all of you. It is so touching what we have heard this morning.
I have to say that the strongest members that are out there as pre-educators are women. We are the implementers of the “Behind the Veil” project and what we have heard this morning is aimed to address the issues of stigma and discrimination among the Muslim community and I have learnt that the project and other people out there in the field are creating critical awareness among the male and female Muslim population, the prevalence not only of the disease but also the stigma and discrimination within the community and to further train the Muslim leadership on AIDS prevention. Nazlin and NMCK’s strategies involving the formation and the strengthening of community network support for Muslims who are both infected and affected by HIV/AIDS is the objective that the US Government is promoting and in particular, facilitation in stigma reduction.
I would like to speak a little bit about the vision of the US government. This project is the eye of our vision, it has a selected priority structure, a priority population and a priority intervention in the fight against AIDS. We believe that the strong network, which is what we are learning about this morning for a sustained response will provide the structure in public and private sector to achieve the targets of our particular program and will assure the continuation in the field.
The NMCK has been an important partner to help us succeed in these areas. Private sector networks will also be catalyzed to organize and rationalize the growing response to homes in communities who are infected, education and care for orphans and vulnerable children and opportunities to project women and young people from infections through abstinence and behavioral change.”
