FROM ANGELINE SIPARO, THE COUNTRY DIRECTOR OF THE POLICY PROJECT, A USAID- PEPFAR FUND IN KENYA ACCREDITING NAZLIN UMAR FAZALDIN RAJPUT AND HER HISTORICAL GROUNDBREAKING PROJECTS

At the National Muslim Council of Kenya, NMCK-NUR, “Breaking the silence, Behind the Veil” National Launch, Launched by the Vice President of the Republic of Kenya His Excellency Hon Moody Awori  and the United States Ambassador His Excellency William Bellamy, on the 25th day of April at the Panafric Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya.

“USAID and the policy project believe powerfully in organizations within the community tackling HIV/AIDS and the National Muslim Council of Kenya (NMCK)is just the right type of organization because of various factors such as:-

  • The power of NMCK and its very important grassroots reach.
  • The NUR Muslim women’s network of the NMCK is just the right target and the USAID is reaching grassroots women directly, women who are not only vulnerable but who know the pain and burdens of HIV/AIDS.
  • Apart from the vulnerability factors, they are the caretakers not only of themselves but their children, parents, husbands and the community.
  • NMCK’s committed and powerful prime mover Nazlin Umar Rajput and its ability for mobilization.

If we break the veil of silence and also look at the power that Islam has given Muslim women we know that if we educate one woman, we educate the whole nation.

We are tackling the process of devaluation that comes with the diagnosis of HIV, the shame that comes with it and we are stopping the reduction of socialite status. The results of all this is the unfair and unjust treatment due to real or perceived status. Being HIV positive does not give one special rights but doesn’t take away any either.”
